Checklist for Moving a Loved One to a Retirement Community

In our nearly nine decades as a successful moving company, we have been part of thousands of relocations throughout the Peach State and beyond. We have moved Georgia residents from one neighborhood to another, relocated businesses in and out of the state and provided a variety of services to non-profit organizations as they grow and expand. As seasoned Atlanta movers, we’re proud of the role we’ve played in some of the most important transitions of people’s lives.

Helping a loved one move to a retirement community is a major life transition for everyone involved. Below are a few suggestions to help relieve the stress that comes with this big event.

Start Early

As soon as you have chosen the ideal retirement community for the next phase of their life, start divesting them of the trappings of their old life. If you have to sell their house, contact a reliable agent to show it for you. This is especially important if they’re moving some distance away. If they’re renting, inform their landlord of their plans to move and inquire about their security deposit.old-age-164760_1280

Get their financial life in order – transfer bank accounts, set up new ones, etc. Be sure to inform their financial institutions of their new address even if they do their business with them mainly online. They still need this information for their records.

Plan What to Take

It’s highly unlikely that your loved one will be able to take all their belongings with them to their new residence, so sell, throw away and donate what you can as soon as possible. For items they can’t take with them but can’t bear to part with just yet, find a storage facility close to their new address. Get the dimensions of their new living space to make sure there is ample room for the items they want to take with them on their move.
