Top Moving Destinations of 2013

Since the gold rush of the mid-1800s, America has been a country on the move. It is estimated that 43 million Americans change residences each year with the typical American moving 11 or 12 times in his or her lifetime.

America retains the distinction of having the most mobile society in the world. And just where is everyone moving to and from within the continental United States? Read below to find out.

Favorite Destination

After being the perennial second-most favored destination for four years, Oregon has finally landed the No. 1 spot. The Beaver State is the top destination of mobile Americans in 2013, with 61 percent of relocations in the state tagged as inbound moves.

Oregon boasts the deepest river gorge in North America (Hells Canyon at 8,000 feet deep), the largest sea cave in the world and the deepest lake in the United States (Crater Lake). It is also the hazelnut capital of the country, producing 99 percent of the commercial crop, also known as Filberts.

Oregon bumped the District of Columbia from the No. 1 spot, an honor it enjoyed for five consecutive years. The nation’s capital moved down to fourth place with South Carolina and North Carolina occupying the second- and third-favored slots, respectively.

Outbound States

With the automotive industry finally rising from the ashes, Michigan is no longer the top outbound state, a dubious honor it has held for many years. Michigan is now listed in the balanced category, where the difference between inbound and outbound moves is insignificant.

New Jersey is the top outbound state for 2013, with Illinois and New York following closely behind.
